Chair’s Message
Hello Visitors!
Welcome to the virtual home of the IEEE Kharagpur Section! On this website, you will find information about our organizational units and the activities we do.
The IEEE Kharagpur Section is taxonomically classified as a small section in the IEEE India Council under Region 10. Historically, it started as a small chapter under IEEE Calcutta Section in 1983, and eventually emerged as the IEEE Kharagpur Section in 1985. It is primarily managed by the faculty members and students of IIT Kharagpur. Despite its size, our Section is vibrant, dynamic, and impactful. It has been actively organizing various events and activities over the past several years. From its initial existence, the Section has not only demonstrated sustainable growth of its members, but also created a significant positive impact on the local community through its targeted initiatives.
The key focus areas of the Section are to engage, empower, and support the student community and boost their interest in research, to improve networking opportunities, and to address the needs of the local community. We support several organizational units — one Student Branch, four Student Branch Chapters, three Societies, and two Affinity Groups.
The Student Branches and Chapters regularly organize various types of technical, humanitarian, and skill development events targeted towards the student community. They focus on improving the engagement of the students in their activities as well as in the IEEE, by educating them about the benefits of IEEE membership. Their members have received several accolades including awards, scholarships, and conference grants from the IEEE for their initiatives. In 2010, the Student Branch of Kharagpur Section joined the IEEE University Partnership Program (UPP), an elite group of 17 top engineering schools/universities worldwide.
The IEEE Kharagpur Section regularly organizes lectures by renowned personalities, symposia, guidance sessions, training programs for students and faculty, and various professional development workshops. The IEEE Students’ Technology Symposium (TechSym), a flagship event primarily organized by the Student Branch of the IEEE Kharagpur Section attracts international participation. We also work towards improving the Industry-Academia relations by organizing talks by industry experts, workshops in collaboration with industrial organizations, and annual industrial trips. All these activities help the members of the Section to advance their careers, thereby adding value to the membership and encouraging their participation. In addition, the IEEE Kharagpur Section also promotes the culture of entrepreneurship and works towards the participation of Women in technological careers.
This year, our aim is to enhance the impact of the IEEE Kharagpur Section in the local as well as global community. In addition to the various technical activities, we plan to organise a series of humanitarian events to contribute towards the cause of helping the society to survive the COVID-19 pandemic. We also plan to work towards increasing our outreach and community engagement through various membership development and social initiatives.
