Abstract of Talk: In recent times, we often hear a call for the governance of AI systems, but what does that really mean? In this talk, I will first adopt a control theory perspective to explain governance that determines the reference input via value alignment, data scientists acting as the controller to meet the values in a machine learning system, and facts captured in transparent documentation as the feedback signal. I will then adopt a nursing theory perspective to explain how the control theory perspective lacks caring and the need for a carative approach that starts with the real-world problem as experienced by the most vulnerable people. I will conclude with an example of a project on using machine learning to evaluate applicants for home solar panel systems in rural India as well as a discussion of governing large language models. In this talk, we delve into the transformative role of altruistic artificial intelligence exemplified by two critical domains: “compassionate” health and habitat monitoring. By harnessing the capabilities of recent deep learning and affective computing we address some of the most pressing challenges facing humanity today. Firstly, we explore how these technologies can revolutionise patient care and treatment adding an empathic side to “Dr AI”. AI-driven systems are increasingly used for early diagnosis and even interventions, but currently lack on the “human touch”. Affective computing could help at this point to bring empathy to the game and, by that compassion and warmth to the patient communication. Secondly, the talk highlights the use of AI in environmental monitoring. AI technologies are instrumental in tracking habitat changes to manage our ecosystems sustainably. AI can thereby increasingly monitor fauna’s and flora’s wellbeing. Beyond these examples, the idea of a future altruistic and potentially compassionate AI will be introduced alongside ethical considerations and the need for responsible AI development to ensure these technologies contribute positively to society. The goal is to foster an understanding of AI's potential to advance the health of us and our planet in an altruistic, compassionate, and friendly manner. Over the past decade, the confluence of sophisticated algorithms and tools, computational infrastructure, and data science has fueled a machine learning revolution across multiple fields, including speech and handwriting recognition, natural language processing, computer vision, social network filtering, and machine translation. Ensuing advances are changing the way we interact with technology in our daily lives. This is particularly salient when it comes to user input on mobile devices, be it speech, handwriting, touch, keyboard, or camera input. Increased input intelligence boosts device responsiveness across languages, improving not only basic abilities like tokenization, named entity recognition and part-of-speech tagging, but also more advanced capabilities like statistical language modeling and question answering. In this talk, I will give selected examples of what Apple has been doing to impart input intelligence to mobile devices, with two overarching themes as sub-text: (i) enhancing interaction experience through machine learning, and (ii) transforming users' digital lives without sacrificing their privacy. Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a direct link between the human brain and the computer. It involves registering the activity of the central nervous system and interpreting it to determine the state of the human brain or to decode a certain number of commands. In this talk we will discuss ways to detect and interpret brain activity, and some interesting achievements in various research labs. Also, we will look at the BCI market a show some of the devices and algorithms designed by Microsoft Research. Speaker(s): Dr. Ivan Tashev, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/421711

Containerization is one of the most promising modern alternatives to virtualization where lightweight ‘containers’ with only few sufficient properties are run as VMs instead of full-scale OS in virtual mode. Docker and Kubernetes are currently the de-facto standard tools worldwide to implement containerization. Containiration finds useful applications in almost all modern day applications. As such, a detailed tutorial and introduction to these concepts are very important, especially to developers and researchers starting their journeys. In this talk, we will learn the basics of Containerization and how it revolutionizes application development, deployment, and management. We will gain hands-on experience with: - Creating and managing docker containers. - Using docker compose to orchestrate multiple containers. - Deploying application in Kubernetes clusters. Mental Health and Wellbeing is an inevitable part of our quality of life index. Both physical and mental health are intertwined, we must make mental health a priority. Mental illness is an issue and a major global concern. In 2017, mental illnesses were the second most common cause of years lived with disability (YLDs) and the sixth most common cause of Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), resulting in a serious problem for healthcare systems, especially in developing countries. In 2017, mental diseases accounted for 4.7% (3.7%-5.6%) of total DALYs in India, compared to 2.5% (2.0%-3.1%) in 1990. It is alarming to take the necessary steps now. If mental illnesses are left untreated, they can be debilitating in nature making the person disabled. The tragedy is when people are not open to speaking about mental illnesses due to societal negative attitudes, fear of labelling, and stigma. Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in May in the United States since 1949. Gradually it started in other countries to spread awareness about mental illnesses through various mediums like social media, local events, and television. Close to 60 to 70 million people in India suffer from common and severe mental disorders. According to WHO average rate of suicide in India is 10.9 for every lakh people. India is the world’s suicide capital with over 2.6 lakh cases of suicide in a year. Still, Mental Illness is a Stigma in India. The most effective way to combat stigma and deal with barriers is to educate people about warning signs and symptoms of mental illness...Talk about mental illnesses and experiences openly...Encourage people to seek professional help who are suffering from mental illnesses...Practice Kindness and Compassion...It's time to Speak openly about Mental Illnesses... Over the past two decades, the significance of MR image reconstruction has tremendously increased, enabling reduced scan time, improved image quality, and extraction of additional information from the measured data. During this period, MRI has witnessed extensive developments in advanced computational algorithms for image reconstruction, many of which have been fueled by signal processing advances in several areas, including multi-channel sampling, compressed sensing, dictionary learning, low-rank and structured low-rank methods. Recently, also neural networks have been employed for image reconstruction achieving further improvements in scan time and image quality. Most importantly, some of these techniques have found their way in the products of MRI vendors and show significant impact in clinical practice. These developments, together with the advancements in computational hardware have opened a new research field of MRI reconstruction as a computational imaging problem. In this talk, I will discuss the framework of MRI reconstruction as a computational imaging problem and the advantages it provides in enhancing the MR performance thereby addressing important clinical needs.
